Effects of temperatures on pollen germination and pollen tube growth in apple

Apple cultivars in Korea have been experiencing poor fruit sets due to early spring low temperatures and global warming. Therefore, the present study aimed investigate effects of temperature on setting select apple tolerant extreme based response their pollen. The effect pollen germination percentage (PGP) tube length (PTL) was determined under laboratory conditions using ten cultivars. two parameters were evaluated a medium, at ranging from 5 45 °C, °C intervals. variations considerably affected growth all examined maximum ranged 61.5 (“Green Ball”) 99.9% (“Shinano Gold”) with mean 85.2%, whereas 716.5 (“Tsugaru”) 989.8 µm (“Arisoo”) 855.1 µm. There differences cardinal (Tmin, Topt, Tmax) PGP PTL between Mean Tmin, Tmax computed modified bilinear model 4, 27.7, 44.9 6.3, 28.6, 43.7 for PTL, respectively. Our preliminary results may be used low-temperature warming-friendly farmers can also exploited develop temperature-tolerant during flowering.
